Israel renews air raids on Gaza

By Lindsey Hilsum

Updated on 28 December 2008

More than 280 Palestinians die as Israel ignores international protests in order to pound Gaza by air for a second day.

Israeli jets and helicopters have been continuing their air strikes on Gaza, destroying targets up and down the Gaza strip.

As many as 290 Palestinians are believed to have died so far in the attacks.

The Israelis say they are targeting Hamas weapons and tunnels used to smuggle supplies into the Gaza strip.

But a mosque, a TV station and a fuel tanker were among more than 200 other targets destroyed.

And as doctors in Gaza say the hospitals are unable to cope, the Israelis are lining up forces for a possible ground assault.

Gaza's ruling party Hamas has vowed revenge, including a wave of suicide bombings on Israel's "cafes and streets".

No media are being allowed into the enclave but our international editor, Lindsey Hilsum, is close to the border at a site overlooking Gaza city.

Tzipi Livni

Lindsey Hilsum spoke to the Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni. She began by asking her what she meant when she talked about "changing the equation".
