Is Hillary having a wobble?

By Sarah Smith

Updated on 14 November 2007

Just weeks ago she looked unassailable in the race for the US presidency. But is Hillary Clinton having a wobble?

A new poll out today suggests support for her is waning in the key primary states, with a majority of voters saying they think she only says what people want to hear.

Now her campaign has been shaken by revelations they planted questions from the public. And democrats are increasingly fretful that the prospect of a Clinton presidency has set a demoralised Republican party alight.

It's her standing as the leading frontrunner that's under threat. In Iowa the polls are neck and neck and, as the first state to vote, this matters hugely. So it's here that her rivals are really getting stuck in.

A poll today says more voters in Iowa believe she says what people want to hear rather than saying what she believes. She still has a commanding lead in the national polls, but the states that will vote first matter most. And that's where her popularity is slipping.

As Hillary's campaign seems to slip and falter some of her weaknesses as a candidate are becoming more apparent.

It's getting nasty because Clinton bashing is the one thing that unifies the Republican Party these days. She says that's because she's the candidate they are most scared of.

Other Democrats fear that she may be the only candidate that will persuade Republicans to get out and vote next year.
