Irish vote to stop the EU treaty?
Updated on 06 June 2008
Fears grow in the pro-Europe camp that Irish voters will decide against ratifying the EU reform treaty.
The Irish prime minister has warned that a "No" vote in next week's referendum on the new EU reform treaty would have dire consequences.
The latest poll, in today's Irish Times, shows opponents of the treaty have doubled their support over the last few weeks, overtaking those intending to vote in favour.
Ireland is the only EU country holding a referendum. Its vote is critical because every state needs to ratify the treaty for it to come into force.
