Irish voters reject EU treaty

By Carl Dinnen

Updated on 13 June 2008

The people of Ireland reject the Lisbon treaty on European reform with 55 per cent voting no.

The result throws the future of the EU into chaos with European leaders say there is no "plan b".

European sceptics have declared the European project dead, dealt the same fatal blow French and Dutch voters dealt the EU Constitution in 2005.

All Ireland's main political parties except Sinn Fein wanted a yes vote, with the Taoiseach himself spearheading the campaign.
