Four months into the US surge, sectarian killings are down. But there are more American casualties.

Their mission: to secure Baghdad. Their aim: to curb the sectarian violence.

Thousands of extra troops are on the ground in the Iraqi capital. Military leaders say their presence is making a difference.

But there are more indiscriminate bombings and more American casualties.

And there is evidence that all the extra security has exacerbated the city's ethnic divisions.
