The Ministry of Defence says a British soldier has been killed in Iraq as a result of wounds sustained during a fire fight.

The next of kin of the late soldier have been informed.

The news came as elsewhere in Iraq, the prime minister, overseeing the second day of the operation to wrest control of Basra from Shia militias, gave them three days to lay down their weapons or face "severe penalties".
