The Shia militia fighting Iraqi and US forces in Basra has refused a government offer to hand over its weapons in return for money.
As the Iraqi Prime Minister pledged to stay in the city until order had been restored, the Mahdi Army said it wouldn't ''turn over a single bullet''.
Three hundred people have been killed in five days of fighting between Iraqi forces, backed by the US, and the Mahdi Army in Basra and Baghdad.
Eight civilians, including two women and a child, are reported to have been killed in a US airstrike in Basra. The US is looking into the reports.
Roz Upton reports tonight at 6.50pm.
