Iran jails journalist for spying

By Tom Clarke

Updated on 18 April 2009

A journalist, accused of spying for America, is jailed in Iran for eight years without any evidence openly produced against her.

Roxana Saberi, who has dual American and Iranian citizenship, was found guilty of espionage by a revolutionary court after a five-day trial behind closed doors.

She insists she is innocent and says she will appeal against the verdict. Her father says she plans to go on hunger strike in prison.

The case has implications for relations between Iran and the US, as the Obama administration attempts to reach out to the Islamic Republic.
