The move, by the country's supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, came in the wake of growing concern over the policing of opposition protests at the re-election of Mahmoud Ahmedinejad - including reports that police had fired at students in university dormitories.

The British Foreign Secretary, David Miliband, has expressed his "serious concern" over the unfolding row.

Mr Ahmedinejad this morning postponed a planned visit to Russia.
