How US attitudes changed forever
Updated on 31 October 2008
Whatever the outcome of next week's election, there are signs that Barack Obama's campaign has already affected perceptions of race among Americans, reports More4 News.
A New York Times/CBS poll found that nearly two-thirds believe whites and blacks have an equal chance of getting ahead in society, up from 50 per cent in July.
Fourteen per cent still said most people they knew would not vote for a black presidential candidate, but that is considerably lower than in the summer.
Race has been less of a divisive factor than expected, allowing Obama to turn states like Virginia that should have been safe for McCain into swing states.
Keme Nzerem reports from Charlottesville.
