Sarah Palin revs up John McCain's presidency bid with an assault on what she thinks is Barack Obama's elitist bid for the White House.

Republican delegates are buzzing with excitement, after a barnstorming speech from vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin.

The homespun Alaskan conservative has sent a jolt of energy through the Republican party. Just 24 hours ago this convention felt like a wake but no longer.

Palin launched into a confident full frontal attack on Barack Obama, her media critics and the Washington establishment, even describing herself as "a pit bull with lipstick".

It was a right wing message the conservative base lapped up.

But will Mrs Palin win over mainstream America?
