Government could bring new UN resolution on Zimbabwe

Updated on 12 July 2008

By Lindsay Taylor

After Russia and China veto a UN Security Council resolution on Zimbabwe sanctions, the British government could propose a new resolution.

First time round it was vetoed. But the government says it has not ruled out another UN Security Council resolution to impose sanctions on Zimbabwe if there is no rapid progress toward mediation and an end to the violence.

Last night's vote left Robert Mugabe's regime celebrating what it called a "triumph over international racism" after Russia and China vetoed measures ranging from travel restrictions on Mugabe and his top allies, to an arms embargo.
