Speaking from the White House, George Bush tells the Republican convention John McCain "is a great American and the next president".

President Bush has told the Republican convention in St Paul, Minnesota, that John McCain "is ready to lead the nation".

Speaking via a video link from the White House, the president told delegates the Republican presidential nominee was "a great American and the next president".

Mr Bush said: "I've stood in the ruins of buildings knocked down by killers and promised the survivors I would never let them down.

"I know the hard choices that fall solely to a president. John McCain's life has prepared him to make those choices. He is ready to lead this nation."

Laura Bush, the president's wife, also addressed the convention, praising the choice of Sarah Palin as vice-president.

"I'm proud that America's first female vice-president will be a Republican woman," she said.
