From Russia with frost?

By Lindsey Hilsum

Updated on 05 November 2008

Nowhere are they happier with Barack Obama's victory than in Kenya.

The American election is unlikely to change anything there, but having someone of African descent in the White House thrills Kenyans, especially Mr Obama's own family on his father's side.

Meanwhile, in a small Japanese town which just happens to be called Obama, they sang a Hawaiian love song to welcome the newly elected president.

But from Moscow, a decidedly frosty reception. The Russian leader Dmitry Medvedev said he hoped for better relations with the United States but immediately threatened retaliation over America's missile defence plan.
