Food and fuel the focus of G8 leaders as they have their cake and eat it

The twin issues of soaring worldwide food and fuel prices dominate the opening day of the G8 summit in Japan.

As leaders of the G8 countries met some of their key African counterparts to address the crisis, Gordon Brown urged British households to do their bit to stop wasting food.

The calls to do more came hot on the heels of the world leaders' six-course lunch, followed by an eight-course dinner, including something called a "G8 fantasy dessert".
