First aid flight reaches Burma

By Keme Nzerem

Updated on 12 May 2008

The first American aid flight to Burma arrives in Rangoon after a week of negotiation and accusations of foot dragging by the military junta.

The UN world food programme said the aid going into the country is only 20 per cent of what's need to help the more than a million displaced victims of Cyclone Nargis.

The regime now puts the official death toll at 28,458, with 33,416 still missing, although western agencies suspect the figures are far higher.
