Hizbollah forces apparently co-ordinated their rocket attacks: at least dozens raining down on the Israeli villages of Kiryat Shmona], Safed and Kfar Horpash in half an hour.

Israeli jets also bombed the village of Qaa near the Syrian border - officials there claimed at least 33 people died.

And for the first time jets also struck predominantly Christian areas north of Beirut - destroying four bridges near Jounieh cutting the coastal highway to Syria and forcing the UN to cancel relief convoys.

Beirut has suffered another heavy bombardment: Israeli warships shelling the southern suburbs of Haret Hreik and Roweiss as air strikes targeted the coastal suburb of Ouzai.
