The European Union has approved a 2,000-strong police and justice mission to Kosovo.

The announcement comes on the eve of the province's declaration of independence from Serbia.

Russia and Serbia oppose independence, but at least 20 EU countries, including Britain, are expected to recognise Kosovo after it breaks away from Belgrade.

Around 600 British troops are on standby to fly out if there is serious unrest after the declaration.

Serbian troops were driven out of Kosovo in 1999 by Nato bombing raids designed to halt the violence against the province's Albanian majority.
