Elvis has left the building

By Felicity Spector

Updated on 31 October 2008

Felicity Spector finds out why an Elvis impersonator is left singing the blues in Las Vegas.

What state does the economy have to reach to leave an Elvis impersonator out of work in Las Vegas?

Yet that's what's happened to singing telegram-a-like Michael Jackson. Tourist numbers are down, gambling revenue is dwindling and he's left singing the blues.

Not that Jackson has turned against the Republicans. Although, he told me, he wanted to see Hillary Clinton in the White House, once she was out of the running he threw his support behind John McCain.

"I can't believe Obama is destined to win," he said. "I think it's going to be super close. Maybe McCain will win with something like 51 per cent of the vote."

It seems Obama is just too liberal for his tastes and he grew more concerned after the Republican ads about Obama's former pastor, Jeremiah Wright, and Sarah Palin's claim that her opponent was 'palling around with terrorists'.

"He's just very left wing, he has all these radical associations," Jackson complained. "But McCain, he's not just a moderate - he's really independent."

But this wannabe Elvis is most impressed by John McCain's military credentials. His own father served in Vietnam, he says, and he admires McCain's service and his fortitude, during those years as a prisoner of war.

"He stayed loyal to his fellow soldiers, rather than getting the hell out at any cost. Obama has nothing to compare with that kind of experience, that kind of test."

And there's a cheer for Sarah Palin, too: "Palin is actually middle class. She's the first Vice-Presidential candidate who's come from a regular background - usually to get to that position you need the support of all the special interest groups who donate millions."

And from the singer who can't quite stop talking politics, a parting remark. "I'm an entertainer. And I just want to say - not everyone in the entertainment industry is for Obama."
