The economic turmoil engulfing the world's markets has done nothing for John McCain's prospects of reaching the White House.
Polls in the top five battleground states, which were held by the Republicans at the last two elections, all put Democratic candidate Barack Obama in the lead.
The McCain campaign has responded with another slew of negative attacks, trying to steer the focus away from the economy.
The candidates are about to face-off in their second live televised debate in Nashville, Tennessee.
