Monday 5 January 2009: Barack Obama had action packed day in Washington DC after seeing he daughters leave for their first day of school.

Monday morning started with Malia and Sasha heading off for their first day at a new school, before their father set off for his own first day - as president-elect in Washington DC.

In the morning, Obama met with House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi and Senate majority leader Harry Reid on Capitol Hill, before talking to his economy team in the afternoon.

His aim for the meetings was to discuss his economic recovery plans, including a fiscal stimulus package for the economy.

"The reason we're here today is because the people's business can't wait," Obama told reporters at a photo opportunity with Pelosi. "We've got an extraordinary economic challenge ahead of us. We're expecting a sobering job report at the end of the week."

He later told his economic team: "Not only do we need to act boldly, swiftly and with sufficient magnitude to make a difference, but we also have to do things in a new way."

But while he settles into his new role, footage has emerged showing that Obama could have had a very different career. The clip from 2001 shows Obama on an amateur food critic panel reviewing a restaruant called 'Dixie Kitchen'.
