Crowds back struggling Palin
Updated on 22 October 2008
Thousands cheer US vice-presidential candidate Sarah Palin in Nevada as she bids to shore up Republican support. Jonathan Rugman reports.
Palin ditched the bitter attacks on Barack Obama and instead targeted women in her speech as she accused him of failing to pay his female staff as much as men.
However a new poll says she is the most unpopular vice-presidential pick in 28 years, hence her change of tack to focus on gender.
Previously, the self-styled pitbull in lipstick accused Obama of palling around with terrorists. But the line polled badly and has been dropped.
The poll also found 55 per cent of voters saying Palin was unqualified.
Thousands of dollars has been spent on clothes and hair for the current governor of Alaska who has won 'pin-up' status stateside.
But her campaign appears to be pinning hopes on complacency among Obama supporters.
