Crackdown fears in Burma
Updated on 24 September 2007
Burma's military junta warns it could act to quell the wave of demonstrations across the country.
It began a few weeks ago as a handful of protesters waving placards. It's now become Burma's biggest demonstration for almost 20 years.
Up to 100,000 people led by Buddhist monks have marched through the streets of Rangoon chanting for the release of the detained opposition leader Aung San Suu Kyi, as the ruling military junta warned it was ready to "take action" against them.
So far the authorities have done little to stop them. But as the protests spread from Rangoon across the country, including the second city of Mandalay, there are fears of a tough crackdown.
This evening the White House urged the junta to use restraint.
