In Iraq, there are confused reports about the weekend's battle near the holy city of Najaf involving members of an obscure Shiite cult.

Confused reports have emerged over a weekend battle near the holy city of Najaf involving members of an obscure Shi'ite cult.

The Iraqi Defence Ministry says nearly 300 militants were killed. But contradictory reports from other Iraqi government departments and US officials on who they were fighting.

What is known is that scores of bodies have been found in a small village - including, by some accounts, those of women and children.
