Colleagues mourn soldier killed in Helmand
Updated on 27 February 2010
Colleagues of a British soldier killed in a blast in southern Afghanistan yesterday have been paying tribute to him in a service close to where he fell.
Sergeant Paul Fox, 34, from 28 Engineer Regiment, attached to the Brigade Reconnaissance Force, died yesterday after being caught in a blast near a check point in Nad-e-Ali, Helmand. Trooper Pete Sheppard, who has been blogging for Channel 4 News from Helmand, is in the same unit, and was on the other end of the radio when Sergeant Fox died. In his latest extraordinary dispatch, Trooper Sheppard speaks of the incident, of how the other members of the unit marked Sergeant Fox's death, and of their subsequent operation against the insurgents suspected of being responsible.
His death, the third in three days for UK forces - brought the toll of British fatalities since the conflict began to 266.
Sergeant Fox was in the same unit as Trooper Pete Sheppard, who has been blogging for Channel 4 News from Helmand. In his last dispatch on Friday, Trooper Sheppard wrote about being "aware that the insurgents are watching us" as they went out on clearance patrols.
Trooper Sheppard's next article is expected to talk about Friday's attack and pay tribute to Sergeant Fox.
