Updated on 23 April 2009

Pakistan has responded to the news by sending in just a couple of hundred troops, who were almost immediately attacked by gunmen.

Channel 4 News has exclusive pictures from Buner, where militants are now openly roaming the streets, keen to impose their version of Islamic law.

They have pushed west from Swat, where the Pakistan government has now ceded control.

Now they are approaching Mardan and the strategically important highway between Peshawar and Islamabad.

And they have told us they are determined to spread their power across the country.
