China urges Sudan to accept UN

Updated on 11 April 2007

By Lindsey Hilsum

Sudan faces new pressure to allow UN peacekeepers into the troubled Darfur region - this time from China.

After a trip to the Sudanese capital and refugee camps in Darfur, China's assistant foreign minister urged the African state to accept a UN peace plan, but said the international community was wrong to dictate to Khartoum.

China's involvement is significant. It buys much of Sudan's oil and is a permanent member of the UN Security Council.

Channel 4 News spoke to our China correspondent Lindsey Hilsum from Beijing and asked her what the Chinese are doing to put pressure on the Khartoum government.
