Chaos in Congo as rebels advance

Updated on 30 October 2008

By Jonathan Miller

The Congolese town of Goma remains under siege with reports of shooting, rape, and looting, and hundreds of thousands of people on the move.

Last night Tutsi rebel forces reached the outskirts of the town of Goma before declaring a ceasefire. Inside the town Congolese and UN troops have taken up positions.

The UN Secretary General has called for an immediate end to the crisis, which he said was creating a "humanitarian catastrophe".

Aid workers say it is the culmination of two years of violence which has forced nearly one million people from their homes in the eastern areas on the Congo-Rwanda border.

Jonathan Miller is just outside Goma on the Congolese-Rwandan border.
