The Cuban leader misses 80th birthday celebrations, fuelling speculation about his health.

More than 5,000 people had arrived for the start of celebrations to mark the 80th birthday of Fidel Castro.

But there was one notable absentee: the ailing Cuban leader himself.

Castro said he wasn't well enough to attend, again fuelling speculation about the state of his health.

His brother Raul remains temporarily in power.
