More than 5,000 people had arrived for the start of celebrations to mark the 80th birthday of Fidel Castro.
But there was one notable absentee: the ailing Cuban leader himself.
Castro said he wasn't well enough to attend, again fuelling speculation about the state of his health.
His brother Raul remains temporarily in power.
