President Bush's plan to send another 21,500 troops into Iraq is his last chance.

America is sceptical, Congress downright hostile. One of his own party's leading senators called it the most dangerous foreign policy blunder since Vietnam.

President Bush admitted tonight that his plan to send 21,500 more US troops to Iraq would take time to work, as his new top team faced tough questions on Capitol Hill.

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said the US was ready to defend its allies, but warned Iraq's prime minister his government was living on borrowed time.

But this is also the last chance for President Bush's policy on Iraq.
