Burma's military moves in

Updated on 26 September 2007

By Channel 4 News

The crackdown has begun.

Near the Shwedagon Pagoda, for days the focus of these protests, warning shots and tear gas have been fired.

There are reports of dozens of arrests, protesting monks being hauled into army trucks.

But the demonstrations continue.

In the centre of Rangoon the crowds still defy the military.

Monks lead the way, but the civilian support for them is clear.

The soldiers are out in force trying to retake the streets.

In many areas they appear to be watching and waiting.

Reluctant - so far at least - to use crushing force.

Perhaps the most remarkable thing about this uprising is just how many pictures continue to leak out of the country.

Snapshots of a crisis unfolding.

Whatever the country's leaders do next will be watched by the whole world.

So it is clear the defiance is continuing.

It isn't known if the first casualty of this unrest was a monk or a civilian.

But the crowds are angry at the way the monks are being treated.

Their determination making a mockery of the official ban on more than five people meeting.

The worry now is that today's death could be just the beginning.
