The prime minister is telling MPs that he'll meet the Dalai Lama when he visits London in May.
The Commons announcement came as the Pope appealed for "tolerance and dialogue" to help end the violence in Tibet.
Earlier hundreds of ethnic Tibetans - some on horseback - had rioted inside China in support of Tibetan independence.
The latest incident began as demonstrators marched on a government building in China's western Gansu province.
It follows unrest in Tibet's main city of Lhasa over the past week, where the Chinese authorities say that more than 100 people have now turned themselves in to police.
