Channel 4 News spoke to the Prime Minister on the second day of his trip China.

Speaking in Shanghai, the Prime Minister has confirmed that the government is backing a new plan it hopes could avoid it having to nationalise the Northern Rock bank.

Critics said the proposals meant the government would be lending more money, for longer than it had ever expected.

Gordon Brown said the deal was not a sweetener for a potential buyer for the bank.

Sticking close to the Prime Minister on his trip is tycoon Sir Richard Branson, who claims he's in "pole position" to take over.
