Brown, Lama to meet; China unhappy

Updated on 19 March 2008

By Lindsey Hilsum

Gordon Brown risks the wrath of the Chinese by agreeing to meet the Dalai Lama when he visits Britain in May.

Meanwhile, troops have tightened their control of the region and foreigners have been prevented from entering ethnic Tibetan areas of western China as the rebellion spreads, amid reports of a heavy police presence.

China's calling it a "life and death struggle" with protestors demanding independence for Tibet and calling the Dalai Lama a human face with the 'heart of a beast'.

In Gansu province extraordinary scenes have emerged showing Tibetan rebels on horseback, descending from the hills.
