Updated on 20 July 2008

Gordon Brown has declared the government will do "everything in our power" to secure the release of five British hostages held in Iraq for more than a year.

Concerns have increased after the release of a video claiming one of the men had commited suicide.

The tape, which Mr Brown condemned as "abhorrent", alleges a man known as Jason took his own life in May.

British officials stressed they can't verify the claims.
