Britain to stop training Kenyan soldiers after insurgency crushed

Updated on 28 July 2008

By Nick Paton Walsh

Channel 4 News learns that the UK government will stop Kenyan training after allegations a British unit crushed an uprising there.

Operation Monogram trains forces in countries with less than perfect human rights records, including Yemen and Ethiopia.

It is a secret British military programme to stop al-Qaida spreading into the Horn of Africa, but it has caused deep moral misgivings at the heart of Whitehall.

Human Rights Watch says civilians were caught up in the operation in Mount Elgon when the unit, 20 Para, used torture and rape. It is claimed dozens of people were killed and have disappeared.

The Kenyan army has denied the claims.
