Border 'completely out of hand'

Updated on 25 March 2009

By Sue Turton

Barack Obama says he will consider sending troops to the Mexican border to counteract a drug-fuelled war.

"Completely out of hand" is President Obama's blunt assessment of the battle raging on America's border between Mexican drug cartels and the Mexican authorities.

Over a thousand have been killed this year alone.

Now with the violence spilling over the border, the US authorities say they are deploying hundreds of federal agents and high-tech gear to try and stem the flow of drugs and weapons.
