Battle for Baghdad's Sadr City

By Nick Paton Walsh

Updated on 11 April 2008

Tension rises in Iraq after militia head Moqtadr al-Sadr's aide dies in fighting between his Mahdi Army and US and Iraqi troops in Sadr City.

Almost 100 people have died in the last week in Sadr City, a slum of 2.5 million people in eastern Baghdad.

American and Iraqi troops have for the last fortnight enforced a vehicle ban and put up checkpoints around the slum.

It's hoped the blockade will stop gunmen there firing rockets at the Green Zone, but it's also led to a drastic shortage of food, water and medicine for civilians.
