Basra after the pull-out

Updated on 15 December 2007

By Nick Paton Walsh

What does the future hold after after the British have handed over responsibility for security in the Iraqi city?

Three and a half years since their arrival in Basra, British troops will tomorrow hand over responsibility for security to the Iraqi authorities.

It is a key moment - not just for the British, but for many hundreds of thousands of Iraqis who live in daily fear of violence.

The withdrawal of UK troops will be a real test of whether the Iraqi police and army are capable of maintaining security in a city beset by rival militias and criminal gangs.

Channel 4 News has been talking to Basrans about what life will be like when the British withdraw.
