Three and a half years since their arrival in Basra, British troops will tomorrow hand over responsibility for security to the Iraqi authorities.
It is a key moment - not just for the British, but for many hundreds of thousands of Iraqis who live in daily fear of violence.
The withdrawal of UK troops will be a real test of whether the Iraqi police and army are capable of maintaining security in a city beset by rival militias and criminal gangs.
Channel 4 News has been talking to Basrans about what life will be like when the British withdraw.
