Barack Obama's speech draws thousands at Berlin's Victory Column

Updated on 24 July 2008

By Nick Paton Walsh

Tens of thousands pack Berlin to hear Barack Obama as he urges a new transatlantic pact after the divisions of the Bush years.

In scenes more suited to a rock star than a politician, the American presidential candidate, Barack Obama, has laid out his credentials as the man to restore US relations with the rest of the world.

"This is the moment" - with that repeated refrain Barack Obama addressed tens of thousands lining the streets in Berlin, sounding like the presidential election was already fought and won.

"We must not allow new walls to divide us" - a message of transatlantic unity as he took his presidential campaign to the cities of Europe.

In the city where President Kennedy delivered his famous 'Ich Bin Ein Berliner' speech at the heart of the Cold War, candidate Obama urged a renewal of the goal of a world without nuclear weapons.

We must answer the call for a new dawn in the Middle East come together to save the planet, he said, in a clear departure from the divisions of the Bush era.
