Aung San Suu Kyi on Burmese TV

By Channel 4 News

Updated on 05 October 2007

Aung San Suu Kyi appears on Burmese television for the first time in years.

The UN's envoy to Burma has warned the country's military rulers that their crackdown on protesters could have "serious international repercussions".

Briefing the Security Council on his visit to the country, Ibrahim Gambari said he was concerned about continuing reports of arrests and beatings by the junta and called for the release of all political prisoners.

During his visit, Mr Gambari met the opposition figurehead Aung San Suu Kyi, who's under house arrest. Pictures of the two of them were broadcast today in Burma - the first time in many years she's been seen on Burmese television.

Inigo Gilmore has this report from Bangkok on the diplomatic manoeuvres. It contains some disturbing footage.
