Afghan rebuilding targeted

By Nick Paton Walsh

Updated on 02 May 2008

From the frontline in Afghanistan, Nick Paton Walsh reports on how Taliban fighters are destroying American efforts at reconstruction.

The US military says it wants to double its emergency funds for reconstruction in Afghanistan, to $400m.

But as fast as new buildings and roads are built - Taliban fighters are moving in to destroy them.

Our foreign affairs correspondent Nick Paton Walsh is embedded with American troops from the 101st Airborne in eastern Afghanistan.

He sent this report from Terezaye - north east of the strategic town of Khowst - and 20 miles from the border with Pakistan where American and Afghan troops are facing a ghostly insurgency that's hard to spot and even harder to tackle.
