Up to 100 people are killed by a US airstrike in Afghanistan on the day the country's president is in Washington for talks with the Obama administration.

The strike took place in the western province of Farah, where the Red Cross says scores of civilians were killed as they sheltered in the village of Bala Boluk.

Secretary of State Hillary Clinton expressed her deep regret at the incident, but the tragedy threatens to overshadow a summit aimed at re-launching a new US strategy not just in Afghanistan, but in the whole region.

Pakistan's president is also attending as fighting between the country's army and the Taliban intensifies.
