Afghan focus for UK troops

By Gary Gibbon

Updated on 16 June 2008

On day two of President Bush's visit to the UK, Gordon Brown announces an increase in the number of British troops deployed to Afghanistan.

Gordon Brown has brushed off speculation that British soldiers could be withdrawn from Iraq this autumn.

At a press conference on the second day of President Bush's visit to the UK, he echoed the president's insistence that there should be "no artificial timetable" for troop withdrawal.

But his message made clear that Afghanistan is now the focus of Britain's military commitment. Troop numbers there will be increased.
