Afghan campaign 'indispensable'

It is emerging that Britain will send a small extra contingent to Afghanistan for a limited time, but only if other Nato members deploy more forces too.

Still basking in the afterglow of the international consensus achieved at the G20 summit in London, President Barack Obama set out his stall for more cooperation in the country, calling on Europe to contribute more military support to the campaign there.

In Strasbourg for a Nato summit, the president described the Afghan campaign as "indispensable to our common security".
