Afghan MP's courage under fire

Updated on 06 October 2008

By Sue Turton

Sue Turton met Afghan MP, Malalai Joya who is in London to receive an award for her work in defending human rights.

She has been called the bravest woman in Afghanistan for publicly denouncing those she considers war criminals, standing up for women's rights and campaigning on behalf of rape victims.

Malalai Joya's work has been widely honoured abroad, but at home the outspoken MP has faced suspension, hostility and even death threats.

Today she is in London to receive the prestigious Anna Politkovskaya award - given to courageous women who have defended human rights.
