A brief history of Guantanamo Bay

By Channel 4 News

Updated on 08 December 2008

The self-styled architect of the September 11 attacks Khalid Sheikh Mohammed tells the military judge at Guantanamo Bay detention camp he wants to confess and plead guilty.

Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for Mohamed and his four co-defendants.

Set up after the invasion of Afghanistan, the controversial detention camp at a U.S. naval base holds about 250 prisoners, with about 520 other men and teenagers previously held there having been released or transferred to other governments.

Despite saying it wanted to close the camp, the Bush administration never got round to it, but President-elect Barack Obama plans to close the prison, with future trials to be conducted by U.S. civilian courts and military court-martial.
