15 Iran captives freed

Updated on 04 April 2007

By Channel 4 News

The 15 British naval personnel held in Iran have been forgiven and set free - the Iranian President's Easter gift to Britain.

The captives' release was announced during a press conference by Iran's President Ahmadinejad. He said that the gesture was a "gift" to Great Britain.

The president also said that his government was "sorry the British government is not brave enough to confess its mistake over entering Iranian waters," adding that the Iranian nation was "saddened" by Britain's action.

On Monday Channel 4 News carried a live interview with Ali Larijani, secretary of Iran's Supreme National Security Council, in which he said that his priority was to resolve the dispute by diplomatic means.
