The prime minister hopes an upturn in the country's economic fortunes can bolster Labour support ahead of the general election.

Gordon Brown's comments in Downing Street this morning pointed up the role of the economy in deciding the ultimate fate of his government, looking ahead to the sunlit uplands of recovery before he has to go to the polls for a general election.

But last night's share of the vote - with fewer than one in four voters supporting Labour - was worse even than that achieved by Michael Foot.

So what does the party do to revive its fortunes?
